My dream began while in high school. At the recommendation of my mother, I enrolled in typing classes. I did not know it then, but this was some of the best advise she could have given me, because it started me on my career path and lead to my love for computers, which was just becoming a hot item at the time. Soon after entering college, I got married and pregnant with my daughter and I had to quit college to help care & provide for family. Later I had a son and I worked hard & sacrificed a lot to be the best wife and mother. In an effort to better myself, and meet my new obligations, I enrolled into SER Jobs for Progress. This program taught me more about computers and the entire process of the office environment.
After completing the course, I started out as a receptionist and continued to slowly advance myself as best as I could while taking care of my family. There was so much I wanted to be and so much I wanted to do but my focus stayed on my daughter and son. During that time, I continued to work in the office environment and advanced as much as I could in my positions. But I could only go so far without a degree. For 23 years I waited for it to be my time again.
When my son graduated high school, I knew it was time. I re-enrolled in college and did not hold back. I did not take the opportunity for granted as so many of us do. I knew I was not only doing this for me, but also to be an example for my children. I wanted them to know that they should never give up and if I could go to college, so could they.
At that time, I believed if I could just get my Associate degree, I would have something to be proud of. Well, I got my Associate degree in Business Administration in 2011. But once I got it, I realized I had outgrown that goal. So, I decided to keep taking classes and I got my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Information Technology in 2014. I had finally accomplished the goal I had first started dreaming about in 1984. But to the shock and surprise of those who knew me and even to myself, I still wanted more, and I received my Master of Business Administration in Project Management in 2016.
During that time, my daughter completed her Bachelor degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and now has a successful teaching career. She is currently in the process of completing her Master degree of Instructional Technology. My son went on to complete his Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering Technology.
It is amazing what a motivated person can do when given the opportunity. It might be a new year and you are not where you think you should be but wait on God. Believe in your heart that your time is coming, and it will. There is a reason for your wait.
